1st Student Symposium

On Friday, True North hosted its first annual student symposium. The theme for the symposium was friendship. The day could not have gone any better! It was a day filled with great conversation around a great idea – friendship. Faculty and students shared in meaningful discussion around great texts (Aristotle’s Ethics, etc.), as they sought to understand the true nature of friendship. We had a wonderful panel discussion as distinguished members from the community, including MDC President Madeline Pumariega, weighed in on what friendship means to them. The seminal event was a keynote presentation on friendship from the Executive Director of Great Hearts, Andrew Ellison. Students shared in fellowship, food and fun, and had the chance to build upon and cement their own friendships with each other.

We could not be more proud of our students, who embraced the proposal of a day set apart to explore “friendship” in community. Faculty and students had a chance to participate in what is truly meant by the word “school,” “schole”, or “leisure.” What better way to go to school than to spend a day of “leisure” as a community of friends (faculty and students) in pursuit of true and noble things. We also wanted to thank the faculty who helped organize the day and lead seminars. It was a truly wonderful day! It is a day that will live on as one of those “high points” / “cultural moments” that helps define who we are as a school – TRUE NORTH. We are already beginning to think about next year’s symposium.
